NATURE

Writer's picture: Louise EmanuelLouise Emanuel

There is so much noise in the landscapes of our mind. We live in the abstract space inside our heads, gravitating towards chaos. Worrying about things that will or won't happen. Ruminating on how to make those things happen, or not happen. Making plans, doubting plans, making values, doubting values, doubting ourselves.

Is this all we really are, a series of thoughts? Our lives reduced to a set of steps to follow methodically. Mindlessly ticking off boxes of what makes a "good life" often standardised by a set of values and beliefs mass produced to keep us in a perpetual cycle of seeking and consuming, feeling as though we are missing something.

Consider how it feels to travel beyond the planes of human concern, to exit the mind and return to immediacy. The eternal present that rests in the palms of your hands at all times. The antidote to noise is silence. Whilst these struggles are innately entwined in modern life, we are not sentenced to or confined by them. To take yourself out of your mind, to return to nature, is to be free.

You need not even venture into nature to find this sense of presence, although it pertains to many lessons in all its forms that may otherwise remain hidden. The flowers are never attempting to be anything other than what they are, they do not compare, nor do they make plans to only bloom within certain constructs of time. There is no five year plan for the bird in the sky. This is because they are removed from our noisy world of human concern. We have the capacity to access this peace within ourselves when in need of retreat.

It is not the nature you walk amongst that brings value, but it is remembering that you are nature. Travel from the world within your head to the one that is immediately in front of you. Be where your feet are. In moving away from our constant desires, projects and routines, we find ourselves connected to something deeper. To the essence of life.

To be one with the nature of this universe is to completely embrace uncertainty. This is not only okay, it is reality. You do not need to be certain about anything before you meet it - all you require is patience, presence and a willingness to witness it.
