5 POEMS ON FALLING IN LOVE

Writer's picture: Louise EmanuelLouise Emanuel

AWKWARD ARMS

awkward arms

gentle fingertips

tentative hands

careful lips

wandering eyes

listening ears

sharing stories

hiding fears

falling slowly

keeping pace

time passing

heartbeats race

once strangers

never friends

new lovers

fearing ends

ending nears

pulling away

only friends

feelings fade

same story

rise repeat

still searching

ending incomplete

SECRET WORLD

I know the way I look at you

and see the way you look at me

there is a world that exists between us

that only we can see

it has its own atmosphere

and is not bound to the construct of time

with secrets shared and hearts laid bare

a place for only you and I

the silent looks filled with knowing

as legs under tables gently brush

each layer tenderly unfolded

without any sense of rush

and even in crowded rooms

your eyes I will always find

and in that gaze the recognition

that I am yours and you are mine

FREE

with salty hair and sandy skin

by the sea, beneath the sky

with held hands and quiet laughter

curiosity in brown eyes

with cups of coffee and opened doors

that were once sealed closed

with faces veiled by linen shirts

to sunlight their bodies exposed

with trepidation of what comes next

she leans in, her fear quickly fades

with the sense that within him

she has found somewhere safe

with his patience and gentle hands

letting go was easy

for he had reminded her

that to be truly loved

was to be free

WITH YOU

There is a stillness in the spaces between you and I. A sense of peace that resides in the knowing of where you stand and where I am. In your hands there is safety, in your palms there is me. We dwell in our own realm far away from the in-between of uncertainty. It is a sign on the road in the night, to where I am meant to be. With you, I am closer to me.

An inkling of the path I must take, you are a mirror of all that ignites my passion. Caution thrown to the wind, prudence takes the back seat. For wisdom is not found in the whim of falling into you, but in the inner intuiting that whispers the truth. Fleeting or lingering, lesson or lifetime, I no longer search for reasoning. With you, I am closer to me.

I seek not to reclaim the time lost in learning the tales of your life. We are intertwined, I cherish the days that you are only mine. Sparking sentimentality, trinkets on saved on shelves. Once useless, now a collection of my favourite memories. I see you in my dreams. I think of you and lose sleep. My adoration is yours to keep. With you, I am closer to me.

EXCITEDLY AFRAID

he said…

“it’s scary when you look at me with those wide eyes”

for the things that we feel

seem too soon on the timeline

but I have been thinking

and I have decided

that we may be afraid

but this fear could be excitement

and why is it scary

to feel something so real?

and why are we told

to hide the way we feel?

so maybe these thoughts

I should keep to myself

but I have the sense that within you

the same feelings are felt

because I think I like it

when you are in my space

and even though I am scared

I have never felt so safe

this feeling of fear

may not be of what could go wrong

but the excitement of uncharted territory

having found where we belong

at the risk of heartbreak

from which we can recover

I want to lean into this

into you, and all yet to be uncovered
